Convention before the European elections in 2014

EMI President Jo Leinen welcomes Mr. Schäuble’s proposals

« We need to think beyond the crisis. In order to achieve a full-fledged fiscal and economic union for the euro area treaty changes will be inevitable.

« In this respect, Mr. Schäuble’s proposals to convene a new Convention can only be welcomed,” said Jo LEINEN, President of the European Movement International (EMI).

« The reforms should not be discussed behind closed doors, but have to be elaborated in a truly European debate,” LEINEN demanded.

« Therefore we need to call in a Convention with the participation of all parliaments, the European Commission and the governments of the Member States to discuss the necessary reforms,” LEINEN continued.

« I hope Mr. Schäuble’s proposal to start a Convention can be decided upon at the December European Council summit and serve to kick-off the process of consultation and deliberation about the future of the European Union before the 2014 European elections,” LEINEN said.

Editor’s Note: The European Movement International (EMI) is one of the largest pan and pro-European civil society organisation with currently more than 75 Member Organisations, bringing together representatives from European associations, political parties, enterprises and trade unions.
